SMS Confirmations: Why Text Beats Email for Appointment Reminders

The statistics on SMS versus email engagement are not even close. Text messages have a 98% open rate, with 90% of those opened within 3 minutes of delivery. Email appointment reminders average a 20% open rate and often sit unread in a promotions tab. For appointment reminders specifically, the medium matters more than the message. A perfectly worded email that nobody reads does nothing to reduce no-shows.

The most effective SMS reminder pattern is a two-touch sequence: one message immediately at booking (confirmation with date, time, and address) and one reminder 24 hours before the appointment. Some businesses add a third touch at 2 hours before, but testing shows diminishing returns beyond two messages. Each SMS should include the essential details and a simple reply option ('Reply C to cancel') so the customer can free the slot for someone else rather than simply not showing up.
