Number Porting: How to Move Your Business Number to DialCloud

Number porting transfers ownership of your existing business phone number to DialCloud's carrier (Twilio). After porting, calls to your number ring directly on the DialCloud platform, no forwarding needed. The number continues to work exactly as before for callers: same number, same area code, just a different system answering. Porting is the cleanest long-term setup because it eliminates the forwarding hop and any associated latency or carrier-specific quirks.

The porting process requires a Letter of Authorization (LOA), which is a form authorizing the transfer of your number from your current carrier to Twilio. You will need: the phone number(s) to port, your account number with the current carrier, the name and address on the account, and a recent phone bill. DialCloud provides the LOA form pre-filled with your information. You just need to sign it. We submit it to the losing carrier, who has 1-4 business days to process it (residential numbers are faster; business and toll-free numbers take longer).

During the porting period, your number continues to work normally with your current carrier. There is no downtime. On the port completion date (which DialCloud schedules and confirms with you), the number switches to our system. We recommend setting up call forwarding from your current carrier to DialCloud as a temporary measure before the port completes. This way your AI agent is already handling calls, and the port cutover is seamless. Total timeline is typically 7-14 business days from LOA submission to completion.
